AFTER everything that has been happening in Limerick lately surrounding the City of Culture debacle I think it’s really important to focus on the positive and share with you some of the many great photographs from the NYE celebrations in Limerick city.
After a really rainy start in Limerick on New Year’s Eve, the clouds finally parted and the sun came out just in time as crowds of families gathered at the Milk Market for the NYE Pageant.
The covered market area was a hive of activity from midday with over 200 children busily preparing for the lantern making workshop and hundreds more arriving to join in the NYE Pageant.
The colourful parade then left the Milk Market and wound its way throughout the Market Quarter though the city and onto the Medieval quarter to King John’s Castle and it was great to see all the families who had gathered to watch the festivities. Then it was time for NYE Sky with the firework display wowing the crowds and the lighting show projected on the historic city buildings also an impressive sight to see.
Later that night it was time for the NYE Music and although it was bitterly cold at the Potato Market, as you can see from our photos the crowd was in great spirits as they braved the weather to ring in the New Year in Limerick with acts like The Coronas and The Strypes proving particularly popular. There were more fireworks then to enjoy at midnight with St. Mary’s Cathedral providing a beautiful backdrop. Here’s hoping we will see more events and photographs like this in 2014 as things get back on track for what will hopefully be Limerick’s finest year.
