Gardai attached to the Divisional Drugs and Crime Units searched a property at Portcrusha near Castleconnell and discovered the haul of cash.

During the operation, which saw over two dozen Gardai involved, two males aged in their 50s and 40s were arrested in connection with the find.

Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan said that the seizure was “significant” and part of a “larger operation targeting illegal activity. We believe this money to be the proceeds of crime and therefore treating the operation as a major disruption to organised crime”.

The two men are currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, at Henry St. Garda Station.

They men can be held for up to seven days before charge or release.

Enquiries are ongoing as are further investigations.
