Shut and lock all doors and windows even if your going out for a short time, also be mindful of securing external doors even while at home.

It is advisable never to hide keys outside of your home or never leave them in an obvious place near doors or windows.

Try to make your home look occupied when you’re away by using timers on radio and lights etc.

Don’t leave car keys near doors or windows on hall table as car theft through burglary is also on the increase.

Do not keep large amounts of cash in your home, and try to keep any jewellery locked away.

Fit a door viewer. This will allow you to safely see who is outside prior to opening the door.

Install an efficient intruder alarm system and try to get into the habit of setting it each time that you leave your home.

The garda spokesperson said, finally “realise the importance of a good neighbour. A good neighbour will keep an eye on their neighbour’s property and will call regularly to see that everything is ok. This is particularly important for the older person.”

This week, gardai were investigating a number of burglaries in the city and its immediate outskirts where thieves targeted car keys, cash and electrical equipment.
