LIMERICK Chamber has teamed up with Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run to help provide friendly competition amongst local businesses.

For each employee who finishes a race in the Great Limerick Run on May 4 next, their company will earn points per mile finished. The company with the most points in their category will be declared the ‘fittest company’.

A number of companies have already got behind the challenge including Dell, Cook Medical, Northern Trust and micro firm Copytype. Each will be encouraging their staff, suppliers, customers and industry partners to get involved.

“Our work in the Chamber is about helping companies to succeed. One of the greatest assets any company has is its employees. We hope that this challenge will encourage companies to develop healthy lifestyle strategies for their employees which will in turn lead to a more productive and successful workforce.

“It also gives us a unique way to support the Great Limerick Run which brings substantial economic benefits to the Limerick region year on year,” explained Limerick Chamber CEO, Maria Kelly.

The challenge is open to companies of all sizes with categories for micro, small, medium and large size companies. Participants do not need to be runners as walkers are also encouraged to participate in the Great Limerick Run.

According to chairman of Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run, Joe Leddin, the event is all about encouraging individual to compete and achieve their personal goals.

“This challenge brings another dimension to our event which is now becoming the largest participatory event in the Country and the GLR team are looking forward to seeing how companies embrace the challenge and friendly competition,” said Mr Leddin.

“In 2013 we launched the ‘team relay’ option which proved very popular in particular with companies as employees enjoyed training together in a friendly but competitive way,” he added.
