LOVE/Hate has done “no favours for An Garda Siochana”, according to the a former detective who helped bring down some of the country’s most feared criminals.

Sean Lynch served for over 30 years on the streets of Limerick and since his retirement he has said he is still “proud and passionate about the force”.

But he believes the latest crime wave is being encouraged by the portrayal of fictional gangland figures in the hit RTÉ series.

“Love/Hate is doing us no favours. These young lads getting tips off the TV on how to be criminals. It’s ridiculous to see Nidge and the rest of them young fellas portrayed like that”.

“It’s all the drugs and killings that create the sensation and glorification and that’s what we need to change in society.”

Mr Lynch will hold a number of Crime Prevention meetings in Limerick West where communities are to get advice on home protection from crime prevention officers.

Meetings are scheduled for Ballybrown, Mungret and Patrickswell in the coming weeks where people will be given advice on methods to safeguard their properties in the winter months.

Mr Lynch commented: “It is very disappointing that we still have no Crime Prevention Officer in Limerick since the last person retired in May. Limerick is a county that needs a Crime Prevention Officer and I would urge the Government to make a speedy appointment.
