Fairview Rangers FC

Our A team were our first team into action this week, playing Carew Park on Thursday night in the first round of the Tuohy cup. A considerable improvement in performance saw us lead one nil at the short whistle, our goal coming from Eddie Byrnes. An excellent first half by our lads and, truth be told we could have been two or three goals to the good, only for the excellence of former player Jamie Stewart in goals for our opponents. Unfortunately, despite our having more chances and possession, lady luck once again eluded us, conceding an equaliser and then another (which took a wicked deflection) in the second half, to end our interest in this seasons divisional cup. In saying that, it was a much more assured performance then the past few games, and bodes well for the rest of the season.
We have to show character from here on, and play with the confidence we showed in this match, and stand together as a team, both on the pitch and in training, as the ability is in the squad to be in a higher league position than we currently occupy. On the match itself, we had outstanding performances by both Evan Waters and Lee Whyte in the full back positions ably assisted by Eoin O’Sullivan and Niall Mullen in the centre of defence. Our midfield more then held their own, with Luka Tedde put in some telling crosses throughout the match, showing that he can an asset to the team, if he can reproduce this on a more consistent basis. Up front Eddie Byrnes once again turned in a fine effort and left everything on the field (as he always does).
Another positive was the introduction of current minor players Dylan Frawley (for his first A team appearance), Darren Roche, and Christy Moran  as second half subs, and all three impressed ,with Christy Moran in particular giving the Carew Park full backs a rather torrid time on his introduction.
It was also good to see Craig Reddan back after a lengthy spell on the side lines through injury, and judging by the manner in which he played, he is already close to being back to his best.  Best of luck to Carew, for the remainder of the competition. On Saturday morning our 13’s entertained Caherdavin in a league encounter.m Our lads took the lead on 20 minutes with an Andrew McMahon effort, and further goals in the second half from Donal Dillon and an absolute stunning strike by Jack Liddy saw us run out deserved winners on a 3-0 scoreline. I saw this game myself, and was very impressed with the type of football being played, with all the young lads comfortable on the ball, and the movement was excellent. The team played well as a whole, but I was particularly impressed by McCarthy at centre half, who did not put a foot wrong all game, and his decision making belied his age, as he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. O’Brien at left full was also to the fore, along with Dillon in midfield, who displayed wonderful balance and control when on the ball, as did Craig Bromell, who just about shaded the man of the match award.
So to Sunday morning, with our A team entertaining Balla, also in the league. Another good performance by our lads, but unfortunately defeat was our lot yet again.
We took the lead in the first half with a strike by Evan Waters, only for Balla to score two in the second half, to win by the narrowest of margins.
On the balance of play we deserved at least a draw from the game, with us hitting the woodwork on two occasions, but when you don’t get the rub of the green, that’s what happens. On this and also on Thursday’s performance, I am confident that we will climb the table shortly, for had we played like this in previous games, we would surely have 5 or 6 more points on the board, then we currently have. Again some minors and B players were given the chance to prove themselves, and each of them acquitted themselves well.
Our minors continued the quest for league honours, with a well merited 7-0 win over a young Charleville side. Kieran long netted two more goals, to bring his seasons tally to an amazing 27 goals, with just over half the season played. Also on target were Ian Quaid, Brian O’Connor, Alan O’Sullivan and Darren Roche.
Our B team had a tremendous result, drawing 3-3 with table toppers Cappamore. Two fine goals by Thomas Hehir and a sweet strike by Cillian Costello were our scorers on the day, in what was essentially a great team performance. Great credit must go to all the players and indeed the management, for the manner in which they are performing, and even though they have lost some fine players to the A team their never say die attitude is a joy to behold.
Finally congratulations to our representatives selected for the limerick youth team. Dylan Frawley, Niall McNamara, Conor Madden, Kieran Long, Brian O’Connor and Evan Maloney, are all deserved selections for our lads. In saying that, the door is not closed on anyone else in our minor team, to force their way into the manager’s plans, given that there are nearly always withdrawals from these panels through injury.

Limerick Hockey Club

Limerick Men’s 2nds team travelled to Waterford on Sunday.  In a game of two halves, Limerick found themselves 3-0 down after half time, but showed some real spirit to get the game back to 3-2 and almost scored the equaliser with a few minutes to play.  Goalkeeper Martis Frank had another outstanding game, with Andrew Smith having a powerful game from the mid field.  Team: M. Frank, D. Barkman, C. Morrow, M. Houghton, J. Smith, S. Cheatly, A. Smith, J. Smith, C. Duggan, K. Beck, A. Combalia, M. Coleman, D. Cheatly.

Old Christians GAA

U15 Football.   we traveled to Mick Neville Park last Saturday afternoon to contest the county football league final against Askeaton. It turned out to be a cracking match and a fitting finale to our clubs final underage match of the year.  While we were in front for most of the game, our opponents were always a threat and only for brave defending from our hardworking defenders this game could have been lost. However with only 2 points separating the sides going into the closing stages, our forwards took our limited chances to wrap up the game. The final score, Old Christians 4-04 Askeaton 0-08. Johnathan Roche accepted the trophy on behalf of an outstanding group of young players.  The panel of players were, T Myles, C Joyce, C Kelly, R Lowe, L Byrnes, J Madden, C McNamara, J Roche , D Malone, T Byrnes, L Fitzgerald, A Murphy, L Downes, D Blackhall, K Byrnes, C Clancy, G Power, C Robinson, J Coates, M Clancy, D Franklin and E Lynch.  The management team of John Power, Pat Byrnes and Eric Byrnes and Mikey Ryan have had a magnificent year and thoroughly deserve the credit for all the work they have put in with both the u 14 and the u15 panels.
Underage indoor hurling continues every week; u 8 Wed night at 6:30. u 10 Thursday night at 6:15 and u 12 hurling Thursday at 7:15.

MINOR FOOTBALLERS

Our minor footballers were in County semi final action on Wednesday when they took on Ballysteen in Mick Neville Park Rathkeale. They got off to a great start and we good value for our half time lead of 3-03 to 1-02. Our goals coming from Dylan Cronin, Nathan O Callaghan and Alan O Sullivan. It was a very good team effort in that half with all lines of the team performing very well as they tok the game to Ballysteen. The second half however proved different and we were under serious pressure. Midway through the second half Ballysteen had reeled us in and went in fron with a few minutes left. We were presented with a gilt edged chance to get back into the game with a penalty but unfortunately Jamie Bromwell’s shot crashed off the bar and away to safety. Despite our best efforts we could not close the gap and finished on a final scoreline of  3-09 to 3-05. Best performers on the night were Ronan Lynch, Darren Gavin, David Broderick, Kieran Daly Nathan O Callaghan and Dylan Cronin.

Team: Peader Collins, Liam Brock, Ronan Lynch, Eoghan Shannon, Ruairi o Connell, Darren Gavin, Evan O Brien, Thomas Grimes, Aaron Dunne, David Broderick(0-1), Kieran Daly(0-2), Jamie Bromwell, Dylan Cronin(1-1), Nathan O Callaghan(1-1), Alan O Sullivan(1-0).

Well done to Con Daly and his management team for their efforts throughout the year.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALLERS

The under 14 footballers annexed the Under 14 Div 2 Football county championship on Sunday following a brilliant victory over South Liberties in Claughan. We got off to a great start and were two goals to the good inside the first five minutes courtesy of Jamie Mitchell. The team were performing very well and with points from Glen Clancy(2), Cian O Rahilly(2) and Cameron Di Bennedetto. We lead at the break 2-05 to 0-05. The second half we soaked up alot of pressure but our backs were excellent and restricted our opponents to points from distance. Midway through the second half it was a powerful run by full forward Cian O Rahilly who raised our third green flag and all but sealed the victory. Huge credit to Joe Heaney, Damien O Connell,Ray Mitchell, Donie O Gorman and Martin Ahern who worked hard with the team.

Team: Eoin Sherlock, Ryan Ahern, Lucas O Sullivan, Liam Barry, Padraic Heaney, Jerome Boylan, Colin Shiels, Daragh O Gorman, Reuben McCarthy, Adam McNamara, Cameron DiBennedetto(0-1), Glen Clancy(0-2), Jamie Mitchell(2-0), Cian o Rahilly(1-2), Christy O Hagan. Subs: Jay Hickey, Sean Long, Calvin Moynihan, Jack Hardaker, John Leahy, John Moloney, Jac O Sullivan, James Daly

Final Score: Na Piarsaigh  3-05 to South Liberties 0-10

SENIOR HURLERS

It is a big week for our senior hurlers who are in action on Sunday in Thurles against Tipperary Champions Loughmore Castleiney. Throw in is at 2pm and a big support would be gratefully appreciated. The club will run a bus to Thurles should enough interest be shown. If interested in travelling on the bus please contact Barry in the club at 061 453650.

UNDER 10 HURLERS

Last Sunday afternoon our U/10 hurlers played Murroe Boher  in a great game. A large home crowd made for a great atmosphere and both teams played with great spirit and determination. Murroe Boher were quicker to settle and took an early lead but Thomas McCallister and Dylan Lynch helped to get Na Piarsaigh into their stride with some outstanding hurling in defence. Dylan Skehan and Sean O Halloran also began to hurl well and our lads finished the 1 st half ahead by a point. A very heavy rainshower at the start of the second half impeded the quality of hurling but both teams drove on regardless. A goal by Adam Long put Na Piarsaigh further ahead but a great comeback by Murroe Boher saw them earn a more than deserved draw. Patrick O’ Neill put in a great performance for Na Piarsaigh ( the highlight of which was a splendid point towards the end of the 1st half) while JJ Carey gave a typically energetic display at midfield. James Naughton and John Fitzgerald were also excellent and the whole team in general played very well. Well done all.

LOTTO

The jackpot is now a cool €15,000 following Monday’s draw. The numbers drawn were 2, 5, 12 & 20. Lucky dips went to Rose Healy, John Egan, Liam Halpin and Joe Sherlock. Gerry Shannon took the sellers prize and house draws went to Pat Gleeson +Brian Kelly.
