EXCITING times this week for Shakespeare lovers with a world-class production coming our way. The concert hall has created two slots on Friday October 11 for ‘Othello: Moor of Venice’, pleasing a school audience at 12noon and ordinary mortals famished for the bard at 8pm.
This original adaptation is by Icarus Theatre Collective from Southsea, an outfit that has won several prestigious awards such as Time Out magazine’s Critics Choice.
Theirs is most definitely an original presentation of the story of the jealous Moor and Desdemona, and more tellingly, of Othello and his court hatchet, ‘honest Iago’: “Othello’s world will be brought vividly to life as a live string quartet and stunning ensemble cast combine with some of literature’s most vibrant language and characters. A dangerous tale of ambition, jealousy and love will unfurl as Shakespeare’s classic tale of deception hurtles to its dramatic and poignant conclusion”.
The real dynamic is the conflict between the ruling prince of Venice, mighty war hero that he is, and Iago, their connection being “one of the most chilling and emotionally deep in literature”.
Insidiously, the unvanquished war hero goes on to lose all on return to Venice – that floating, isolated, proud realm. His unravelling is one of the great canvases in paranoia.
