Southill tensions ease in wake of gun arrest

THREATS of serious violence have been quelled in Southill after gardai heightened patrols in the area follwoing a recent shooting incident.

A unpaid drug debt is understood to be connected to an incident in the area in recent weeks.

A 21-year-old man of no fixed abode had been arrested and charged with a firearms offence at Limerick District Court in the wake of the incident.

It is understood that the accused man had chased his intended target through a house with a firearm and a shot was discharged.

The man has been remanded in custody.

In the wake of the violent scenes, last week, extra patrol units had been deployed to monitor tensions.

However, Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan said that the matter has since “eased and tensions have quelled but we are continuing to monitor the area”.
