By KATHRYN HAYES

A NUMBER of children have had to be evacuated from the Paediatric Unit of one of the country’s busiest hospitals after a fire broke out this evening.

The blaze started in a plant room at University Hospital Limerick, formerly known as the Mid Western Regional Hospital at around 6.45pm this evening.

Some 16 patients were evacuated from the Paediatric Unit and brought to other parts of the hospital, after a fire broke out in the plant room on the roof of the laboratory located overhead the childrens unit.

Nobody was injured in the fire and a number of units from Limerick Fire Service are at the scene being supported by units from Shannon town.

A spokesman for the hospital said visitors are being asked to stay away tonight but it is hoped to have the hospital “fully functional in a number of hours”.
