A SIGNIFICANT arms cache including hundreds of rounds and ammunition a firearm and explosive material was uncovered on the outskirts of Limerick city on Friday night.
The discovery was made by a man out walking his dog in Glenagross, Woods in Meelick near the Limerick border shortly before 8pm on Friday night.
Gardai were alerted to the scene and found a firearm, hundreds of round of ammunition of varying calibers, explosive materials and other items of interest.
The army bomb disposal team from Cork attended to make the area safe before further searches took place in the area – those searches continued.
A technical examination at the Garda Headquarters in Dublin will be carried out and gardai say at this stage they are keeping an open mind as to the provenance of the weapons cache.
They are describing their discovery as significant but no arrests have been made.
