Twelve Limerick city and county volunteers with the Limerick Youth Service (LYS) have been nominated for Youth Work Ireland’s Volunteer Awards, taking place in Dublin on Saturday October 12.

The awards recognise the invaluable contributions that volunteers make to young people across the country.

“With over 500 volunteers we received a sizeable amount of nominees so you can imagine the task our selection committee faced” said Dermot Troy of the LYS.

Youth Work Ireland will announce the winners in the coming weeks and they will be formally recognised at an awards ceromony held at the Youth Work Ireland’s National Office in Dublin.

Niamh Keogh of The Laff Caff, The Southside Youth Cafe and The Factory, is LYS’s sole nominee in the ‘Stepping Up Award,’ a category that recognises young volunteers who are moving into leadership roles in their club or project.

Gordon Brown of 4th Corner and The Northside Youth Cafe, David O’Connor and Wynette Reddington, both from the Irishtown Garda Youth Diversion Project, have all been put forward for consideration.

These three have all been nominated for the ‘Making a Difference Award,’ a category that recognises volunteers who engage with young people who are at risk.

Alison Mullane won the ‘Leading the Way’ award last year for her work with Kilmallock Youth Club, while LYS was presented with the ‘Siobhan Cotter Memorial Award’ for its own contribution to youth work.
