AMD Awareness Week will run from September 23 to 29 in Limerick to promote early detection of the signs of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
AMD can cause sight loss and is thought to affect one in ten Irish people over the age of 50.
The week will include a number of events in Limerick to raise awareness of the eye condition.
This year’s campaign has a sporting focus aimed at encouraging people over the age of 50 to “Keep an eye on the ball for AMD”.
The National Sight Loss Agency, Fighting Blindness, the Irish College of Ophthalmologists and the Association of Optometrists Ireland, supported by Novartis, are working together to increase public awareness of AMD and to highlight the importance of regular testing to identify early signs of the condition.
The most obvious symptoms of AMD are distortion and blurred central vision and the sooner a person identifies the condition the better.
A Novartis mobile testing unit will visit Limerick and free testing and information will also be available throughout the week at participating opticians and optometrists.
