LIMERICK will stage the Umbro Quadrangular Tournament from October 3 to 5, with four venues in the city and its outskirts staging the four-team competition involving Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.
Jackman Park, Pike Rovers FC, Janesboro and the Fairgreen have been selected as the venues for the competition, which is played in a league format and was launched last week at the Clarion Hotel in Limerick.
Five players from Limerick were selected in Gerry Smyth’s initial squad of 30, which will be reduced to a 20-man squad before the tournament begins. Janesboro had three players among the extended panel of 30 – Shane Clarke, Shane Waters and Mike O’Gorman – and Pike Rovers had two representatives in John Tierney and John Boyle.
Republic of Ireland’s first game is against Scotland on October 3 at 3pm at Pike Rovers FC and then they face Isle of Man at 1:30pm on October 4 in Janesboro. They finish with a game against Northern Ireland at Fairgreen on October 5 at 3pm.
Teresa McCabe, Chairperson of the FAI Junior Council, said: “The Irish panel is made up junior and amateur players. We have had three trials over the last couple of months. We had 38 players at trials here in Limerick. We had the same in Sligo and Dublin and then the manager and his team picked a panel of 20 players to represent us over the three days.
“The Ireland squad has been training every Saturday for the last four weeks. They had to be in the AUL in Dublin from 9am to 2pm. A panel of 30 have been training for the last month.”
