THE LIMERICK camogie team take centre stage this Sunday 15 as they face Galway at 2pm in the Liberty Insurance sponsored Intermediate All Ireland final.
In what has already been a successful season, winning the Division Two and Munster Junior Titles, Limerick’s team manager Joe Quaid will be looking to add the ultimate prize to the trophy cabinet.
Limerick reached the final with an impressive semi final win over Meath. Standing in their way of All Ireland glory are a Galway side who overcame Waterford 1-15 to 1-7 in their semi-final.
The two sides have some recent history too. They met in Mungret, in April, in the final group game of the league with Limerick narrowly coming out on top on that day by 0-10 to 1-5.
Galway, who will be buoyed by a large travelling support (as they also contest the senior final), are expected to provide an attacking threat with goals coming in recent games from Rebecca Hennelly and Orla McGrath. In addition Dee Burke, Aoife Callanan, Aoife Donohoe and Finola Keely have also been getting on the scoreboard for the tribeswomen.
Limerick’s track record through the year though has been excellent and with many clubs organising buses to the final, Limerick are expecting a large and vocal support of their own.
Supporters counting once more on the consistency of Niamh Mulcahy with placed ball and from play and the goal threat that Dymphna O’Brien and Mary O’Callaghan provide.
To back up their scoring power, Limerick’s defence has been one of the meanest at this level with captain Michelle Casey leading a strong back line.
Unsurprisingly manager Joe Quaid and selectors Ann Herbert and Ger Sheehy have kept faith with the team that started the semifinal with the only positional switch seeing Katie Campbell move to midfield alongside Deirdre Fitzpatrick allowing Caoimhe Costello to resume her more usual position on the wing.
The game is being televised live on RTE2 at 2pm with live radio commentary available on Limerikc’s Live95fm.
The Limerick Post would like to wish Joe Quaid, Michelle Casey and all the squad the very best of luck in the final. Here’s to All Ireland glory.
