THE Pride Festival continues this week celebrating Limerick’s LGBTQ community through art, cultural awareness and music. There are lots of events happening in the build up to Saturdays Pride parade. a dizzying array of entertainment featuring the music of Barbra Streisand or the Mother DJs cutting edge electronica or the high camp of Eurovision’s ABBA.
Mickey Martin’s Bar presents ‘T’was the Night before Pride’ this Friday September 6 featuring DJs from Dublin’s electronic dance club Mother. Mother is run by the GCN (Gay Community News) weekly and with a focus on electronic and disco tunes the underground club is one of the capital’s best dancing haunts, electro producers Galaxy and LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang have guested on their decks.
The Mother DJs led by Ghostboy and Rocky will bring their record crates to Mickey Martin’s for a Pride Party with aerial acrobatics, street performers and drag hostesses. The Mother Crew rocked the Electric Picnic last Sunday as they took turns to play the closing party in the festival’s Body & Soul Arena. Expect a rainbow of colour, house music and disco: “Think Halloween except Gay!”, suggest the folks at Mickey’s.
The Pride Supper Club happens on Thursday September 5 with Dame Aunty Lily and Diva Judy O’Connor performing the music of Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli and more. Hats and Boas is the theme for a night of camp fun at The Supper Club happening in Dolan’s.
The Pride Closing Party features the legendary tribute band Abbaesque headlining two floors of entertainment in Dolan’s on Saturday September 7. The Irish based ABBA tribute band have been blasting the greatest hits of Sweden’s pop icons since the ‘90s, headlining The Point Theatre on New Years Eve in 1998 and holding a long residency in The Olympia Theatre. Abbesque are guaranteed to work all Dancing Queens into a frenzy of Pride flavoured glam pop.
Also on the bill is DJ Mona Lott with ‘80s pop and camp classics and DJ Jules pumping out dance classics.
