Councillor calls for Derry sister-city scheme

-

King-Johns-Castle-LimerickINDEPENDENT councillor Pat Kennedy has put forward a motion for the Limerick City Council September meeting calling for the establishment of a special committee to advance sister-city and inter-city relationships with Derry.

The Limerick City South councillor noted that there are “many similarities and parallels between our two ancient and historic cities”, including Derry’s title of UK City of Culture 2013 as Limerick prepares to become Ireland’s National City of Culture 2014.

“Both our cities had legendary sieges – magnificent examples of heroic endurance. For the men who starved to defend Derry and the women who fought with broken bottles to defend Limerick left us with dramatic and stirring moments, turning points in the procession of history,” continued Cllr Kennedy.

“I believe that the formation of a sister-city relationship between Limerick and Derry would create a framework of communication and interaction between the people of our two cities, and forge bonds and ties of friendship that cut across all barriers of class, creed or political outlook.”

Cllr Kennedy has also tabled a motion urging the Council to honour the late US President John F Kennedy and historical legend Brian Ború (also known as Mac Ó Cinnéide) by renaming the Shannon Bridge John Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge and naming the square at Merchant’s Quay Brian Ború Square.
