A RISING star of Irish Mountain Biking and the Limerick Lakers U17 Boys Basketball Team have been named as the winners of the Performance in Sport Award for June and July.

14-year-old Leah Maunsell from Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Club, who last week represented Ireland in the European Youth MTB Championships 2013 in Austria, is regarded as one of the country’s best up-and-coming cyclists having notched up numerous top 2 finishes in races throughout the country this year. The June Award winner won the U14 National Championships this summer and has been added to the Cycling Ireland Youth Programme in preparation for the 2020 Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Limerick Lakers U17 Boys Basketball Team have been named winner of the July Award following their runners-up finish at the 11thInternational Basketball Tournament in Poland in July. The team also won the North Munster League and got to the Final of the Cork Cup and the Cork League.

Sponsored by Limerick-based first aid and medical device specialists Fleming Medical in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnerships, the Performance in Sport Award was launched earlier this year to recognise the valuable contribution made by sporting clubs and organisations to community life throughout Limerick.
