A well-known GAA player from Glin has been named as Limerick FBD Young Farmer of the Year and will now represent the county in national competition.
Tim Scanlon (24) will compete against 23 other young farmers in the nationwide semi-finals from August 27 to 29, with six participants then progressing to the national final in the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare on Tuesday September 3.
Tim milks cows on a spring calving grass based system while rearing his own replacements on an outside farm. The increase in the number of milking cows has made it necessary to expand his farm business and he also has plans to develop a beef enterprise in the future. Tim is also strongly active with Glin GAA club and has represented his county at minor, U21 and junior level.
The FBD Young Farmer of the Year competition, now in its 15th year, is jointly run by the Irish Farming Association and Macra na Feirme. Entrants are judged on a number of criteria including farm business initiative and innovation, levels of farm efficiency and enterprise quality, farm safety and environmental protection awareness, agricultural knowledge and community involvement.
The overall winner will receive a bursary to undertake international travel and study farm practices.
