I HAVE taken some stick this week for my comments in last week’s Game Over, Ball Burst. I had said that the Limerick hurling support had over hyped the occasion ahead of last weekend’s semi final.
The release of two songs, the over confident attitude towards Clare and the almost assured belief that Limerick would win the All Ireland was hard for me to understand.
I totally get that fans are allowed to get carried away. I know that they are allowed to get excited and say and sing what they like.
I don’t know if I managed to articulate myself correctly in this column and on radio (wouldn’t be a first, mind you). However my only query is this. Where does this confidence come from? Why are Limerick never the understated underdog?
It is now 40 years since Limerick won an All Ireland Senior Hurling crown. It was 33 years before that. When you consider that the wait for two All Irelands has taken 73 years, you might be able to see where I am coming from when I ask, whatever about hope and wishful thinking, how are Limerick fans so over-confident when it comes to their teams?
Seeing the players after the game and their shocked state, one can only feel sorry for them. They gave their fans a massive effort and a hugely successful season. Let’s hope they are remembered for that now.
