JOHANN Wolfgang von Goethe, the 18th century German philosopher, remarked that “the string quartet is a conversation between four intelligent people.”
Over the Autumn months, Limerick County Arts Office invites music lovers to ‘eavesdrop’ on four such quartets as they discuss some of the most profound musical ideas written for the genre. These concerts take place in the intimate setting of All Saints’ Church in Castleconnell on the last Tuesday of August to November, taking place at 8pm.
The magnificent Carducci Quartet will open the season on Tuesday August 27, returning with a programme of works by Mendelssohn, Donnacha Dennehy, Beethoven and Philip Glass.
According to PRO Tony Rodgers, “The string quartet is the ultimate chamber music ensemble in classical music. With the richest repertoire in classical music, the string quartet has been used by all the major composers from Haydn in the late 18th century right up to the 21st century.”
The 2013 series will run over the four months August to November and will bring to Castleconnell renowned quartets such as the all-girl Benyounes and the Arcadia Quartet from Romania.
Concerts start at 8pm; tickets at the door. A leaflet with details can be had from The Arts Office, City Hall, Merchant’s Quay, Limerick, or e-mailing [email protected]
