JOHN Dundon has been found guilty of the murder of Shane Geoghegan and has been given a mandatory term of life imprisonment by the three judge non jury Special Criminal Court this Tuesday in Dublin.
31-year-old Dundon of Hyde Road had pleaded not guilty to the murder in the trial that lasted almost one month.
Shane geoghegan was gunned down in a case of mistaken identity as he walked home on November 9, 2008. He was shot five times and once in the back of the head just yards from his home.
The gunman Barry Doyle is already serving life for the killing of the popular Garryowen rugby player in Kilteragh, Dooradoyle.
Dundon had ordered Doyle to kill another man on the night in question but Shane was shot as he walked to his girlfriend’s house.
At the verdict hearing in Dublin, Dundon wore headphones and listened to music as the 84 page judgement was read out.
The judges found the evidence of April Collns and her sister Lisa, together with the testimony of Christopher McCarthy all to be credible.
After the guikty verdict was read out and the mandatory life sentence was handed down, Dundon’s barrister said that his client regretted the killing of Shane.
The Geoghegan family did not comment or read impact statements only to let the facts speak from themselves in the case.
