IT IS just over 50 years since the Diocesan College closed its doors and now the search is under way to locate the last group of pupils to pass through it doors on Limerick’s Henry Street.
The Limerick Diocesan College, now St Munchin’s College, was established by John Young, Bishop of Limerick, in 1796.
The school was previously situated on the site of the Garda Station and the students of 1962 were the last group to sit their exams there before the move to Corbally.
Now one of the heroes of Limerick hurlers’ last All-Ireland win in 1973, Eamonn Rea, and Richard Heaslip, father of Ireland and Lions rugby star Jamie, are leading a search for class of 1962.
“We would like to get as many as possible together to mark the occasion but the challenge of contacting our student colleagues after so many years is both interesting and daunting,” said Richard. “Hopefully, the photograph may help to jog a few memories.
The list of students of that year includes Michael Lenihan, Tim O’Sullivan, Oliver Plunkett, Billy Moloney, Edward and John Lynch, Tom McMahon, Tom Mullane, Dermot (Derry) Murphy, Eamonn Rea, Jim Somers, Joe O’Shea, Paddy Stack, Kieran Simpson, Andrew O’Sullivan, Pat O’Shaughnessy, Tom Crawford, Tom Hartnett, John Leonard, Edward Hennessy, Noel O’Connor, Kevin O’Connor, James McNamara, Pat Chrystal, John Quaid, Morgan Feely, Des O’Driscoll, Frank Duhig, James Diffley, Richard Heaslip, Peter Ferguson, Joe Carroll, Sean O’Grady, Tom O’Brien, Tom Moore, Eugene Noonan, Aidan Corr, Raymond Jacques, Peter Moloney, Francis Hanley, Victor McLean, John Delaney, Donnacha Hickey, T McDonnell, A Wallace, P Wixted and A Hourigan.
