Anger over dumping outside shop

JJ secondhand storeTHE owner of a secondhand shop in Limerick city has expressed anger at the “terrible carry-on” of people who have dumped scrap waste outside his premises.

JJ Suckling, proprietor of JJ’s Secondhand Store on John’s Street, arrived at his shop on Monday morning to find a Super Ser heater, a computer, a monitor, a printer, buggies and a microwave left outside the shop. He told the Limerick Post that it is not the first occasion when people’s unwanted items have been abandoned at his business.

“We often find rubbish in shopping bags but this is a lot worse and it has to stop,” said Mr Suckling.

“This often happens and if you look around the side of the shop, you could see bags of rubbish left there. These are shopping bags filled with household waste and people would walk along the street as normal, then dump it and simply walk away. It’s a source of great annoyance and it doesn’t look good for the shop or the street. It gives a bad impression and it lowers the standard of the place.”

He added that the items dumped outside the store on Monday July 29 would not be sold in the shop as it was scrap waste. Mr Suckling said it had a significant impact on his working day and if it keeps happening, it will give a negative impression of the area.

“This is terrible carry-on and it’s not the first time it has happened. There was a burnt out car left outside one of the businesses across the road from me at the weekend and the owner was out the next morning sweeping up all the debris and broken glass. The more it happens, the more people will think it’s okay to dump their rubbish along the street, and it’s not.

“I arrived at the shop for 9am on Monday and as soon as I saw what I was greeted with, I rang the Gardai and then the corporation, who said they’d send someone out straight away and it’s still there. It has affected my normal working routine.”
