A BIRTHDAY party was held on Thursday July 18, and a skate competition is planned for Saturday afternoon to mark the fifth anniversary of the Limerick skatepark at Mount Kennett.

Cllr Tom Shortt, who led the campaign to build the park, said: “The park is busier than ever this summer, packed with teenagers enjoying the sunny weather and the perfect conditions for skating.

“An older generation of skaters now in their early twenties who campaigned to get the park built have been joined by a new wave of talented young skateboarders from around the city making full use of the park every day especially during the school holidays.”

The Labour councillor also revealed that the city’s skateboarding community has submitted a proposal to host a festival weekend for skaters from all over Ireland and abroad during Limerick City of Culture 2014.
