US AUTHOR Jeffrey Hickey is to read a chapter from his novel ‘Morehead’ in the White House Bar, on Limerick’s O’Connell Street this Saturday July 20 at 7.30pm.
The book, described as an explicitly adult coming of age novel, is set mostly in San Francisco and features a chapter about the first Gay Games which took place in the Californian city in 1982.
The Federation of Gay Games (FGG), for whom Mr Hickey had read a Morehead excerpt at a Gay Games 30th-anniversary celebration last year, put the author in touch with the Limerick 2018 Gay Games bid committee.
Cillian Flynn, communications coordinator for Limerick 2018 said: “We are delighted to welcome Jeffrey to Limerick. Morehead is a fantastic novel about Dave Morehead, a young man living in San Francisco during the height of the sexual revolution in the late 1970s to the mid-80s, told from the perspective of journals, classroom assignments, and transcribed audio recordings.
“We are proud to acknowledge the legacy of the Gay Games and to recognise the importance of the cultural elements of the games. As Limerick prepares to become the National City of Culture for 2014, we feel that this event is a perfect combination of the rich history that is present in our city and attached with the Federation of Gay Games.”
Limerick recently played host to a delegation of FGG site inspectors who visited the proposed venues to decide if Limerick should be chosen as the host city of the 2018 Gay Games.
If the Limerick bid is successful, The White House bar is the proposed venue for the Poetry Slam event which will form part of the Gay Games’ range of cultural activities.
