DAISY the baby fox is just one of the animals affected by the heat wave weeping the country.
She was rescued by Rosie and Denis Campbell who run the Killmallock-based animal rescue and rehab centre, Animal Magic.
“When we found her she was extremely dehydrated and starving. She is only seven or eight weeks old and had lost her mother. We brought her to the Crescent Veterinary Clinic who immediately put her on a IV drip,” said Rosie.
During the heat wave, Animal Magic has taken in more than 140 wild animals including foxes, badgers, rabbits and hares.
“We urge people to leave water out for the animals and birds. People tend to do this the winter but hot weather can also deprive wildlife of water and food sources. For example worms go deep into the ground in hot weather so the birds have nothing to eat,” explained Rosie.
Daisy is now recovering in the Campbell’s TV room and will remain with them until she regains her strength.
“We have seen a huge improvement. She is taking small bits of food and lapping water from the dish. She is standing up by herself but is still a bit wobbly,” said Rosie.
