HUNDREDS of visitors descended on King John’s Castle when it reopened to the public last Friday after a €5.7 million revamp.
The 13th century castle closed in November for the ultra-modern renovation which includes a new looking glass facade and computer generated imagery and animations.
Previously unseen parts of the 800-year-old castle, including a tower which is the highest observation point of the River Shannon were also open to the public.
Chief Executive of Shannon Development Dr Vincent Cunnane said that King John’s Castle will complement other initiatives and provide a lasting legacy to the people of Limerick.
“This is an exhilarating time for the City, with the recently launched new Limerick 2030 development plan and Limerick’s reign as Ireland’s first City of Culture due to start in 2014. All of these initiatives are opening up new growth opportunities and stimulating additional tourist numbers and revenue into the future,”he said.
The project is being supported by Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport through a grant of €4.7 million, with the balance of the funding being met by Shannon Development.
The Castle will be open all year round (closing for three days over the Christmas period). Admission prices are being held at 2012 rates – adults €9.00; seniors €6.65; children under 5 will have free admission; family rate (2 adults and 2 children) €20.60; (2 adults and up to 6 children) €23.50.
