Call for register of derelict houses

A CALL has been made to draw up a comprehensive list of all derelict houses in estates across the city.

Labour City Councillor Joe Leddin said the list should be drawn up for houses that are in  both public or private ownership.

“Empty derelict boarded up houses in various housing estates throughout the city create huge problems for communities ranging from dumping to criminal activity” he claimed.

“The city council will have to become more pro – active in redeveloping their own derelict housing stock while simultaneously communicating with the owners of private houses who have simply abandoned their properties.

“All the appropriate legislation such as the derelict sites act must be used to compel owners of derelict houses to either re-let or sell these properties.

“I am meeting local residents on a regular basis who have to endure and suffer from the effects of derelict houses beside them while they continue to maintain and invest in their own homes,” he said.
