Enthusiast for the country’s fastest growing leisure sport, cycling, will be taking to the roads across three counties at the end of the month to help local international aid agency Bóthar raise funds to build a creamery in an impoverished African community.
The ‘Rothar 4 Bóthar’ cycle through Limerick, Clare and Tipperary on Saturday June 29 is the latest fund-raising initiative to assist Bóthar in developing a creamery that will help sustain an entire community in Rusizi, Rwanda next year.
Present to help launch the cycle this week was former Limerick hurler and cycling enthusiast Ollie Moran.
The 80km, three-county cycle will commence at UL at 10 a.m. on Saturday next and take a circular route into Co. Clare, taking in the villages of Broadford and Bodyke before a one-hour, midway break at Tuamgraney. It will resume following a light lunch and proceed back to Limerick via Killaloe, Ballina, Birdhill and Daly’s Cross.
Bóthar Overseas Programme Director Conor O’Donoghue said “While the event is ultimately about raising money for our efforts to build the creamery in Rusizi, it is as much about participation. It’s a fantastic route for cycling enthusiasts, not least on the way back by Lough Derg. It’s manageable for cyclists with moderate fitness as we will be taking a leisurely pace and if the weather holds up it will be even better.”
Entry fee for the cycle is just €25, with participants asked to raise up to €100 if possible for the cycle. Participants can register online at www.eventmaster.ie/booking_plugin.php?event_id=238 or by contacting Bóthar’ by email a [email protected] or by telephoning 071 9120100.
