MY piece last week on what unique moments the hurling championship can create seems almost prophetic now. The occasion that unfolded last Sunday 9 afternoon in the Gaelic Grounds was special. Maybe last weekend’s win is the reason we give the GAA such a hard time. The World deserves to see that kind of sporting spectacle. There is no better advert for Ireland and all things Irish than a hurling match. The 19,000 plus crowd who braved the heat deserved the affair they were served up.
Spare a massive thought too for the players. What an effort that was from both sides. 40 amateur players giving it their all for the love of the game that they play.
On a final note, last weekend was a vindication for John Allen. The Cork, All Ireland winning coach, has been the subject of huge ridicule from Limerick ‘so called’ supporters. Allen knows what is need to win on the biggest stage. The doubters have now well and truly been silenced. It is easy for media and fans to comment on the Limerick team, but only the men in charge of them know what is really going on. Let’s keep the hype to a minimum now and make sure Limerick are underdogs for the final too.
