LIMERICK man Kevin Barry has won this year’s International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award of €100,000  for his debut novel ‘City of Bohane’.

This is the first novel for the 44-year-old, who now lives in Sligo.

The former Limerick Post journalist is the author of two books of short stories. Some of which have appeared in prestigious magazines like ‘The New Yorker’. Last year, one of his stories won the EFG Bank-Sunday Times prize worth £30,000, the most valuable short story prize in the world.

The winner, beat 154 other entries nominated by public libraries around the world. The winning novel is set 40 years into the future in a ruined city on the west coast of Ireland, a place laid waste by gang violence and vice.
