THE FINAL games of this season’s Premier league will be played tonight (Thursday 6) as leaders Carew Park face Wembley in Rathurd. Second placed Pike Rovers, who trail the leaders by two points, are also in action away to Kilmallock.
Earlier in the week Carew Park played their penultimate league game as they faced a tricky away fixture to Geraldines, also in Rathurd.
In a game which drew a huge crowd, both sides ebbed and flowed early on.
The breakthrough for Carew Park came mid-way through the opening half as a Geraldines defender tripped John Connery in the area and from the resulting spot kick Gary Griffin dually dispatched to put the champions elect, one goal clear.
Geraldines, through Derek Daly and Bonny Tier, had chances but Gordon Stewart in the Carew Park goal stood firm affecting some good saves.
The insurance goal for Carew Park came just past the hour mark when Pa Boyle conjured up a cracking 25 yarder that whizzed at pace to the net and with that two goal cushion the leaders saw out the game and in doing so, picked up three vital premier league points that see them go back to the summit of this league.
As for tonight’s games, each kicks off at 6.30pm and it now looks likely that Carew will see off Wembley to win the premier league trophy as any slip up will let Pike Rovers overtake them as they should easily overcome relegated Kilmallock.
There were also some good news on the Junior International front as three local players, John Boyle, John Tierney and Shane Clarke, have been called up for International duty.
The Limerick District Schoolboy League will hold its A.G.M. tonight Thursday June 6 up in the Janesboro Club. The L.D.M.C. A.G.M. will take place on Friday June 14 out in the Kilmurray Lodge.
Also the Annual Kennedy Cup will commence on this Monday June 10 in U.L where the country’s best U14 schoolboy talent will be on view. There will be five days of top class football.
