LIAM O’Neill, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, has led the tributes to the Limerick-born broadcaster Seán Óg Ó Ceallacháin, who died on Sunday morning at the age of 89.
He was best known for his Sunday evening GAA results show on RTE radio, which was the longest running continuously broadcast sports programme in the world, and he also played senior hurling with Dublin for 10 years.
He was born in Newcastlewest but grew up in Fairview in Dublin, whom he represented in the 1948 All-Ireland final. His radio show ‘Gaelic Sports Results’ was broadcast for 58 years until 2011.
Mr O’Neill expressed his sympathies to Seán Óg’s family, saying: “Sean Óg’s passing is an enormous loss to the GAA and the world of broadcasting. He holds a very special place in GAA hearts, with his unique voice, and was a vital link every Sunday evening with the GAA results.
“His radio career, and specifically his tenure presenting the same GAA show for so long, has been acknowledged as being one of the longest in radio broadcasting history. He was a true GAA man and had one of the most recognised voices in GAA circles in the country. I pass on my sympathies to his family and wide circle of friends on behalf of the wider GAA family.”
