Taxi driver pleads not guilty to sexually assault

A LIMERICK taxi driver has pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a student in her 20s that he carried in his car in 2011 as she made her way home from a night out. 39-year-old, Abdul Mannan of Rhebogue Meadows, Limerick, pleaded not guilty through a Bengal interpreter when the charge was put to him this week at Limerick Circuit Court.

John O’Sullivan, prosecution counsel for the State, outlined to the court that the jury of nine men and three women will hear from a number witnesses including injured party, a number of gardai based at Roxboro Road Station and a doctor from the MId Western Regional Hospital.

The incident before the court is alleged to have happened after 11pm when the student, who hired a taxi outside a city centre bar to return to her student accommodation on Lord Edward Street, claims she was sexually assaulted by the taxi driver.

The case is expected to last until the end of the week.
