City of Culture launchpad for European event

EVERY group in the city with 100 members or more will be invited to make a contribution to Limerick City Of Culture 2014 with the festival acting as launchpad for the city’s bid to be the European Capital of Culture in 2020. City officials told a meeting of the Cultural and Sporting committee that they intend to make the festival “as inclusive as possible” contacting groups as diverse as the people employed in Revenue and volunteers in art, theatre and cultural groups.

The festival will also be an opportunity to celebrate “how multi-cultural and cosmopolitan Limerick has become,” groups from other cultures and countries being invited to stage an event or make a contribution.

Cllr Tom Shortt (Labour) said children should be involved as much as possible in the event and it was important “there would be a lot of free events so that there won’t be any financial barriers to taking part,” he said.

Officials told the meeting that “as far as possible”, events will be free of charge and they will be relying enormously on volunteers to achieve that”.
