Father on trial for sexual assault of family members

A FATHER of three who is charged with sexually assaulting two of his children together with three nieces of his former wife and a sister-in-law, has said that he was “shocked” when the allegations first came to light. The 50-year-old man denies the assaults ever took place but admitted to gardaí that he wrote in a letter to his former wife that he showed one of her nieces his penis in an “effort to get out of the marriage”. He said there was no truth to any of the allegations made by the complainants.

He denied ever having taken one of the alleged victims on a fishing trip that resulted in an indecent assault at an area in West Limerick. He also added that there “was no truth to any of the allegations” of forcing the females to rub his penis.

The man said that despite being confronted by his then wife over allegation that he showed his penis to one of her nieces, they “stayed together for another few years and had another child. However in 1998, they formally split. The man said that he was now the father of another daughter and was in another long-term relationship.

Referring to the evidence given by his two children, he said it “hurts a lot”. Their relationships had since broken down and he had “no idea why they would say those things about me”.

The trial continues and is expected to conclude later this week.
