A LIMERICK man said he was sorry when he was charged in connection with an incident where a banana was thrown at Manchester City football star, Gael Clichy, during a soccer friendly in Thomond Park last year. Kelvin Reynolds (20) of Pinewood Avenue, Caherdavin appeared before Judge Eugene O’Kelly at Limerick District Court this Wednesday charged with assaulting Garda Sergeant Caimin Treacy as well as a section 6 breach of the public order act on August 5.
The incident occurred shortly before the end of the first half when a banana was thrown on to the playing surface in close proximity to the Manchester City and French defender Gael Clichy.
Following a Garda investigation involving CCTV footage, Mr Reynolds was charged with assaulting Sgt. Treacy by striking him with mineral bottle. He also faces charges of using threatening and abusive language and behaviour in a public place.
When charged by Det Garda Andrew Lacey of Mayorstone Garda Station, the accused man said “I’m sorry” to both counts.
Defending solicitor Sarah Ryan was granted a disclosure of Garda evidence by Judge Eugene O”Kelly.
The matter is back before the District Court on April 10 next and Kelvin Reynolds was released on continuing bail until then.
