IN THE wake of the threats and comments made at the Sean South commemoration held at Mount St Lawrence cemetery earlier this month where dissident members of the Continuity IRA said that British soldiers were legitimate targets, a 42-year-old Corbally man has been charged at the Special Criminal Court with membership of an illegal organisation.
Michael Kiely of Abbeyvale in Corbally was arrested by gardai on January 14 last as part of on ongoing investigation tackling organised crime and the activities of dissident republicans and illegal organisations.
Mr Kiely was arrested as part of the investigation into Republican Sinn Fein and the incidents surroundings the Sean South commemoration at Mount St Lawrence Cemetery on January 6 last.
During the events, masked attendees read from a statement that was said to be from continuity IRA prisoners in Portlaoise. In it they stated that Irish people serving in the British Army are ‘legitimate targets’. This was just weeks after gardai foiled an attempt on the life of a Irish man with family in Southill area of the city and who is serving in the British armed forces.
Charged under Section 21 of the Offences Against the State Act of allegedly being a member of an illegal organisation, styling itself the IRA, Mr Kiely was remanded in custody and is due to appear before the Special Criminal Court later this month.
