The construction of new homes by the Limerick Local Authority received a significant boost with work getting under way on a 29 unit housing development for older citizens at Vizes Court, just off St. Joseph’s Street in the city centre. The €3.3 million Vizes Court project is the second phase of a very successful existing retirement complex, the first phase of which was completed in 2008 and is now home to 21 residents. This new project comprises 23 one-bed and six two-bed apartments for older people. Work commenced in October and is scheduled for completion next November.
Speaking on site as she inspected the works, Housing Minister Jan O’Sullivan said it was “fantastic not alone to see progress in Limerick in terms of new homes like this for our older citizens but the quality of the build is also very reassuring. This high-class new development will provide residents with the comforts and security they deserve in their golden years.
“The pace of work is also really impressive also and 12 months from now, there should be a very happy bunch of residents having celebrated the first of what we hope will be many Christmases here”, the Minister said.
Limerick Local Authorities Director of Home and Community services, Oliver O’Loughlin said that the development was indicative of the high standard of new builds that the Local Authorities intend to deliver in the future.
“A priority for us with any new build is to deliver a quality of home that will be as good as if not better than anything else in the State. This Vizes Court project is an example of the standard we are setting. It will be a retirement complex that residents this time next year will be proud to call home.”
Welcoming the commencement of the works, Mayor Gerry McLoughlin said the first phase of the Vizes Court development was a huge success and the second phase would be of the highest standards in terms of build and fit-out that local authority residents have in the country.
“Residents in this development will be extremely happy with the outcome”, he predicted.
