A MAN charged with being drunk and disorderly at Shannon Street last year avoided prison because a Russian interpreter was not available in court. Eduardas Stankevicius (30), of McGarry House had been ordered to complete a period of community service in lieu of a four-month prison sentence and was to engage with the Probation Services to compile a suitability report. Last week, the court heard he hadn’t engaged with the Probation Services and Judge Eugene O’Kelly was unable to invoke the prison sentence because a Russian interpreter was not present to translate.
Adjourning the case until January 23, Judge O’Kelly warned the defendant to engage with the Probation Service in the meantime.
