Work has started on a €4 million hotel in Dooradoyle with two houses adjoining the Unicorn bar being demolished to accommodate the development. Up to 20 new jobs will be created at the budget hotel and construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The Greene family, who are owners of the Unicorn bar, secured planning permission earlier this year for a 44 bedroom hotel opposite the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.
Despite local concerns about noise and traffic, as well as the over-supply of hotel beds in Limerick, an appeal against planning permission was rejected by An Bórd Pleanala last month.
