Fare dodger avoids prison

A TAXI fare dodger, who spent the previous two weeks in custody, avoided any further time in prison after he paid the €140 fare he failed to hand over after being driven from Killarney to Limerick. Abukar Farah, with addresses at Glentworth Street and Park Lodge, Park Road Killarney, pleaded guilty to the charge of leaving the taxi without paying for the journey from Killarney Railway Station to Limerick on November 3. After arriving at Catherine Street, where he claimed that his friends were going to pay the fare, he left the taxi without paying the driver.

Appearing in court after spending the intervening period in custody, Mr Farah produced the €140 to be paid to the taxi driver.
Noting that the accused had a number of previous convictions, Judge O’Kelly said that he could see “Mr Farah has been moving around the country regularly thieving for himself”.
A public order charge was also before the court dating back to December of last year and Mr Farah pleaded guilty to both offences.
Imposing two suspended sentences of two months in prison on the theft and public order charges, Judge O’Kelly said that if Mr Farah “stayed in Killarney he wouldn’t have gotten into these difficulties”.
