Better Options for students with disabilities

LIMERICK Institute of Technology is set to host Better Options, a free information event for current and potential third level students with disabilities, on November 22 at Thomond Park from 10am to 2pm.
Launching the event this week was paralympian and former LIT student Shane Ryan, a member of the Irish rowing team that competed in November 2012. Shane is an inspiration for many students with disabilities as he managed to combine his demanding training schedule and college commitments despite his visual impairment.

During his visit, Shane happily showed students, staff and Mayor Gerry McLoughlin some of the rowing techniques that propelled him to paralympic victory.
The Better Options programme will feature information on the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE), advice on completing the CAO Supplementary Information Form and details on third level services and supports for students with disabilities.
Sinead Kane, the first registered blind person in Ireland to qualify as a solicitor, will be the key speaker at the event and she will offer advice and guidance to attendees on how to overcome challenges and adversity.
Better Options, run in association with AHEAD (Association for Higher Education Access and Disability) and DAWN (Disability Advisors Working Network) is open to all, including students, guidance counsellors, resource teachers and parents.
