LATER this month, Irish Chamber Orchestra will perform two great concerts with virtuoso Jörg Widmann, principal guest conductor/ artistic partner of the ICO. WUNDERKIND will be a showcase of works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Weber and Widmann himself taking place UCH on Thursday November 22, 8pm and Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford on Friday 23 November.
Widmann has a worldwide reputation as a composer and clarinettist having performed with prestigious orchestras and conductors. These include Christoph von Dohnányi, Sylvain Cambreling, Christoph Eschenbach and Kent Nagano.
“Over the past number of years, he has established a dynamic synergy and great relationship with the Irish Chamber Orchestra,” comments the ICO’s Charlotte Eglington.
In between Mendelssohn’s ‘Sinfonia No. 1, C Major’ and Mozart’s ‘ Symphony No. 41, Jupiter’, he will demonstrate his gift as clarinettist performing Weber’s ‘Clarinet Quintet in B flat major, Op. 34 for String Orchestra’, written for the celebrated clarinettist Heinrich Bärmann. Widmann’s own piece is titled ‘180 Beats a Minute’ and harks back to his college days – not that far away at all.
