‘BACK to the ’80s’ has been an almighty hit as a musical extravaganza, its recent terms of reference boosting appeal to several generations. Laurel Hill Secondary School takes on the challenge for its Autumn production in Lime Tree Theatre, running a ‘Back to the ’80s’ adapted to the skills and vitality of a student cast of 70. According to teacher Hazel ní Anragáin, at least another dozen Laurel Hill girls are working as crew. The school orchestra, augmented by two saxophone players from Ard Scoil Ris, numbers and impressive 22 musicians, two of them string players borrowed from Coláiste Cnoc na Labhras.
St Clement’s and Ard Scoil Ris have eight senior pupils acting in the show too to make sure the dynamic is authentic.
Still, as musical director Suzanne Crevan notes, ‘Back to the ’80s’ could only be terrific fun, “a collaboration of all the best hits of the 80s set within a really good storyline. A 16-year-old boy, played by Jake Madigan, finds himself in his college days of the 1980s although he’s now 30 years old (teacher John McKenna). He makes a journey through one particular year, meeting his high school sweetheart Tiffany (Aoife??) and..”
Does he win the girl for the prom dance or not? With Ann Lawless as chorus director for mega hits of the era, and Sarah Allen grooving the choreography and quiffs, directing the full show is the privilege of past pupil Lorna Maher.
