ELDERLY and disabled people could be left stranded because of new routes and buses recently introduced in the city, it has been claimed. Some routes that were previously served by disabled-access vehicles are now served with buses with steps. Limerick Fine Gael Deputy Kieran O’Donnell has confirmed that he is to meet Bus Eireann officials next week in connection with the issue, having been contacted by constituents with mobility problems who say they cannot climb the steps on the new buses.
A spokesperson for Bus Eireann said that the coaches have a wheelchair ramp but to activate the ramp, the vehicle needs the room afforded by special accessible bus stops.
