Distraction theft

GARDAI are warning the public about letting strangers into their home after a reported incident in Castletroy last week. In what is described as distraction type theft, Gardai are investigating the arrival of “a female fortune-teller to a house at 3pm on Wednesday September 26 last at a house in Milltown Manor in Castletroy by appointment.
“The elderly fortune-teller was accompanied by other members of her family. While the householder was having her fortune told one of the group requested that one of the children be allowed to use the bathroom.” Sgt Broderick adds that “When the group left the householder discovered that a gold ladies ring, a gents gold ring and a substantial sum of cash had been stolen from an upstairs bedroom. It is believed that the group of criminals had travelled from Cork City and also that they visit Limerick on a regular basis.” Gardai are advising that it is not advisable to allow strangers into your home as this type of distraction theft where accomplices steal valuables while another member of the gang engages with the householder are all too common as this unfortunate householder found out to her cost.
