FRIDAY October 5 at UCH is the first for three big concerts brought to us with Vladimir Jablokov and The Slovak Festival Musicians. Jablokov is an outstanding violinist, performer and innovator in the world of classic and folk music, from a high profile family of professional musicians in Slovakia. His ensemble of musicians – nine for this concert – accompanies tenors Sean Costello and Niall Morris, two of the country’s best known and soprano Sandra Oman for a concert dedicated to Mario Lanza’s Life and Music, ‘The Loveliest Night of the Year’.
“People like Mario Lanza, like to see his life on stage and listen to his best tenor performances. This show is about going back to times of listening to him on the radio, more than 53 years ago when he died, and going to see his movies,” Jablokov feels. “We were in the concert hall two years ago with it and sold out, have sold out six nights at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and now to Limerick. This is the last time you’ll see ‘The Loveliest Night of the Year’ here”.
He talks about the Friday 5 concert being backed by handsome audiovisuals showing excerpts from Lanza’s screen roles, photography covering his life and concert tours and some narrative on the idol he was before dying of cardiac complications, aged 38.
This Mario Lanza night is one of three concerts Vladimir Jablokov will bring to the concert hall this year, the others being ‘Classical Twist’ and ‘A Viennese Christmas’.
