Should Limerick win and Waterford lose, Limerick will be crowned champions with two games to go.
Limerick went four points clear at the top last weekend thanks to a Joe Gamble winner versus SD Galway. Waterford knocked Longford off of second spot with a 4-2 last weekend.
Limerick have a right to be hopeful that it could all be over this weekend. Limerick have defeated Athlone Town three times this season already, while Waterford have won one, lost one and drawn one against Finn Harps.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game, Limerick FC manager Pat Scully said “We played well last Friday after going down to 10 men just 30 minutes into the game. We kept the ball well and our passing and work rate was good. We have another tough task this Friday at home to Athlone Town and must again show the same desire as we did last Friday to get the result we need. We have nothing won yet and we must keep our feet on the ground and concentrate on our job and stay professional in everything we do.”
Wise words, as with three games to go, nothing is guaranteed. Two wins from Limerick in their last three, regardless of other results will see the Blues return to the top flight for the first time in twenty years.
Kick off this Friday night is at 7.45pm in Jackman Park.
