LIMERICK music fans will be able to attend the Irish premiere of LCD Soundsystem’s movie ‘Shut Up and play the Hits’ when it plays in the city on Tuesday September 4.
New York’s LCD Soundsystem was formed by producer James Murphy a co-founder of DFA Records. In the last 10 years he released 3 critically acclaimed albums including the indie 7 minute anthem ‘All My Friends’ and the stunning mix 45:33 which was released by Nike Sportswear as a running mix.
Though Murphy played nearly all the instruments on the LCD albums he used a full band for live shows and in 2011 the band played its final show in April 2011 at Madison Square Garden.
The final show has now been made into a movie called ‘Shut Up and play the Hits’ which will get its UK and Ireland premier this Tuesday September 4.
According to directors Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, who previously made Blur’s documentary ‘No Distance Left to Run’, the appeal of the project was the story of a band “who still liked each other, whose relationships had not disintegrated, who were still making great music, who hadn’t burnt out, but had made the decision to quit calmly and quietly. The question of ‘why?’ seemed like a great starting point for our story. It was a decision that seemed typical of James and his idiosyncratic approach to his work.”
The film juxtaposes concert footage from the final show with revealing interviews with Murphy in the lead up to the ambitious concert and on the following day, his first day without LCD Soundsystem.
The premier of the film will be a unique cinematic experience for music fans bringing together cinemas across the UK and Ireland via satellite for a shared red carpet moment including an interview with James Murphy. Limerick’s Omniplex Cinema will show the film with a live satellite link up including the interview with James Murphy on Tuesday September 4 from 8.30pm. And before all that James Murphy will play a DJ set at Electric Picnic on Sunday September 2.
